It's that time of year. Back to school! No matter what your back to school looks like, celebrate a new season with apple Rice Krispie Treats. Easy to make and cute as can be.

easy red apple Rice Krispie Treats

For these back to school Rice Krispie Treats (or, a just for fun fall treat), we start with our BEST Rice Krispie Treat recipe. Add some red food coloring, shape into apples, add a pretzel stem and some gumdrop leaves.

IDEA:

For actual apple flavor, try adding crushed dried apples, like we did to make these apple cinnamon Rice Krispie Treats.

how to make apple Rice Krispie Treats

You will need:

RICE KRISPIES CEREAL

Use the classic cereal or any store-brand version.

MARSHMALLOWS

You will need 10 ounces of marshmallows. Different brands have different densities, so it’s best to use a scale or the weight printed on the bag as a guide, but in general, 10 ounces of marshmallows is about 40 regular-size OR 6 cups of mini.

BUTTER

For best results, we recommend using European-style, salted butter.

FOOD COLORING

To avoid your treats having an aftertaste, I recommend using Americolor brand gel paste in red.

PRETZEL STICKS

Any brand of thin pretzel sticks will work. You'll be breaking them apart in thirds, so you don't need many.

SPEARMINT LEAVES

The green gum drops are perfect for apple leaves. You'll be cutting them up in bits, however, as the leaf shape is too big for the little apples.

BAKING TRAY AND PARCHMENT PAPER

You'll arrange your finished apples on a baking tray. Parchment paper is a great tool to prevent sticking.

TOOLS YOU’LL NEED:

  • red gel paste food coloring
  • non-stick cooking spray
  • scissors

SUPPLIES AND INGREDIENTS

let's make Rice Krispie Treats!

back to school treat idea: Rice Krispie Treats shaped like apples

step one: prepare your cereal and your equipment

Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set it aside.

Spray a large bowl with cooking spray and add 4 ⅔ cups Rice Krispies cereal.

TIP: Spray all of your bowls and spatulas to keep things less messy.

step two: melt the butter and marshmallows

stovetop method:

Cut 4 tablespoons of European-style salted butter into 4 pieces.

Place in a medium saucepan and set over low heat. You do not want to overheat the marshmallows.

After the butter begins to melt, add 10 ounces of marshmallows. Stir frequently until about 75 percent of the marshmallows are melted.

Remove from the heat and stir the mixture until all of the marshmallows have fully melted and the mixture is smooth.

alternate microwave method:

In a large, microwave-safe bowl, place 4 tablespoons of salted butter and 10 ounces of marshmallows.

Microwave on high for 1 minute then remove and stir vigorously, using the residual heat to fully melt the marshmallows.

If needed, you may microwave for additional 15-second intervals, stirring vigorously until melted.

step three: add the food coloring

Stir food coloring into the marshmallow mixture until desired shade is reached. This may take a good bit of food coloring, which is why it's important to use a good brand like Americolor, to avoid any aftertaste.

step four: make your apple shapes

Scrape the marshmallow mixture over the Rice Krispies and mix well until the cereal is evenly coated. Remember, using a greased spatula helps here.

Scoop about 3 to 4 tablespoons of the mixture and place on the parchment paper. Repeat with the rest of the cereal. You should have about 20 apples.

Grease your hands with cooking spray OR rinse with water and shape each apple into a ball. Do not worry if your apples are perfect, they will be easier to shape when chilled.

Chill in the refrigerator for one hour.

step five: decorate your apples

Remove from the refrigerator. Re-shape the apples if needed.

Break a pretzel stick into 2 to 3 pieces and insert in the top of the apples for stems.

Snip the Spearmint leaves into small pieces and attach, sticky-side down, to the apples as "leaves."

Enjoy!
