Take your Rice Krispie Treats to the next level! These double chocolate Rice Krispie Treats are just as easy to make as the classic version, but with a rich, decadent flavor.
chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
Chocolate lovers, are you feeling left out of the Rice Krispie Treat world? Fret no longer, because these chocolate Rice Krispie Treats are just for you. The only thing better than a Rice Krispie Treat is a chocolate-filled cereal treat.
Below, I'll share how to make a batch of treats in an 8-inch square pan, but I'll also give you the ingredients for a larger, 9 x 13-inch pan. I prefer to make smaller batches of Rice Krispie Treats because I find them more manageable.
I'll also share exactly how many marshmallows you need to end confusion. Be sure to check out our BEST Rice Krispie Treat recipe for the ultimate guide in making cereal treats.
how to make chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
I use the classic marshmallow cereal treat recipe and add two kinds of chocolate: Semisweet chocolate chips and unsweetened cocoa.
supplies you'll need
- 8-inch square baking pan
- non-stick cooking pray
- non-stick foil
ingredients you'll need:
- 4 tablespoons salted European butter
- 10 ounce marshmallows (about 40 regular or 6 cups mini)
- 4 ⅔ cups Rice Kripsie cereal
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa (optional)
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Let's make cereal treats
The unsweetened cocoa is optional. I love the rich flavor it gives, but if you prefer sweeter treats, omit this. I also suggest spraying all of your bowls and spatulas with non-stick cooking spray.
Line an 8-inch square baking pan with non-stick foil. You may also grease with cooking spray or butter.
Pour the cereal into a large bowl sprayed with cooking spray and set aside.
Place the butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat and partially melt. Add the marshmallows. Add the cocoa powder (if using) and the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Melt over the heat, stirring frequently, until very smooth.
Scrape the marshmallow, chocolate, and butter mixture into the cereal and use a spatula to fold the mixture into the cereal until it's completely blended.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Use a clean spatula to gently press the treats evenly into the baking dish. Let the dish cool very well and cut into two-inch squares.
how to I make a larger batch of chocolate cereal treats?
To make a larger batch of these cereal treats, grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan. Use a combination of:
- 16 ounces marshmallows (about 68 regular-size marshmallows OR 9 cups mini marshmallows)
- 6 tablespoons salted butter
- 7 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ⅓ cup cocoa powder (optional)
- Cut into 28 squares.
Can I make chocolate Rice Krispie Treats in the microwave?
Because chocolate can be temperamental when melting, I prefer to prepare chocolate Rice Krispie Treats on the stove-top. However, you may make them in the microwave.
If so, melt the butter and marshmallows in a large bowl first, on high for one minute. Stir, and continue to microwave in 30 second intervals until fully smooth. Add the chocolates and use the residual heat to fully melt the chocolate. If necessary, return to the microwave at 70 percent power for 30 seconds.

Right Louise? I went through a dry spell with Rice Krispie Treats and now that I'm back into I have no idea why I waited. They are so so so easy to make and my kids love them.

What happens if you use cocoa krispies too?
Meaghan Mountford
Hooboy, that would be SOME chocolate! I think it might be a bit too much (and I love chocolate), but perhaps without the cocoa powder? Or experiment and give it a try (would love to know if you do). We also have a recipe that uses Cocoa Krispies. https://howtomakecerealtreats.com/cocoa-rice-krispie-treats/

Perfection! Not only do these treats have the perfect texture but the chocolate flavor was just right. I have to admit that I ate half of the pan before sharing any of them. I didn't really want to share any, but I resisted the temptation to eat every bar myself.

How should these be stored once they have cooled off? Fridge/Freezer, and if either, how long could they be stored for?I’ve made them once before (loved them, thanks to this recipe!) but need to make again for an event and wondering how far in advance I can make them. Thank you!
Beth Klosterboer
Store them at room temperature for up to 5 days. If you need to keep them longer, wrap them in wax paper (or Glad Press 'n Seal) then overwrap it in tin foil. Place in a large zip-top bag and freeze for up to 3 months. To thaw the chocolate Rice Krispie treats, place the bag on the counter and let the treats come to room temperature for at least a few hours before opening the packaging and removing the treats. Do not refrigerate the treats. They pick up odors in the fridge and become soft and stale tasting very quickly if refrigerated.
