supplies you’ll need

  • cooking spray
  • 15 plastic Easter eggs
  • pink gel paste food coloring
  • blue gel paste food coloring
  • green gel paste food coloring

ingredients you’ll need

These ingredients will be divided for each color.

  • 7 1/2 ounces marshmallows (about 36 regular-size marshmallow OR 3 3/4 cups mini marshmallows)
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter (preferably European)
  • 3 3/4 cups Rice Krispies cereal

let’s make cereal treats for Easter!

We’ll be working with one color of egg at a time.  I recommend spraying your bowls and spatulas with cooking spray.

Open all of your eggs and arrange them on a baking tray lined with wax or parchment paper.

Grease the insides of the eggs with cooking spray. You may spray all the eggs at once, or, grease a paper towel and rub a bit on the insides of the eggs. The latter method takes more time, but it won’t make the outside of your eggs slippery.

For each color you’ll need:

  • 2 1/2 ounces marshmallows (about 1 1/4 cup mini OR 12 regular-size)
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter
  • 1 1/4 cup Rice Krispies cereal

Place the marshmallows and butter in a greased, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 45 seconds. Stir until very smooth, adding 15 seconds more in the microwave if needed.

Add a few drops of food coloring and stir well.

Thoroughly stir in the cereal.

With fingers coated in cooking spray or rinsed with water, slightly overstuff both sides of an egg with the mixture. Press the egg together and snapped closed.

TIP: Fill the eggs first, wash your hands, and then snap the eggs together.

Repeat with the other two colors of food coloring.

Chill the eggs about an hour and carefully remove from the plastic eggs.

how do you make Rice Krispie treats on the stove-top?

You may of course also make the treats on the stove top.

Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat and add the marshmallows.

Continue to melt over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture is very smooth and follow the instructions above.
