Marshmallows

Published: Aug 14, '21 · Modified: Feb 12, '22 · By: Beth Klosterboer · This post may contain affiliate links.

If you are making a recipe that calls for marshmallows, you need to know just how many marshmallows to use.

Every brand of marshmallows and even every bag of marshmallows has varying sizes of marshmallows so you need to know how to measure them for the best results in your recipe.

Measuring marshmallows to figure out how many regular marshmallows and mini marshmallows are in a cup.

If you look at any of the recipes here on How To Make Cereal Treats, you will find we specify ounces instead of cups.

Weighing your marshmallows gives you the most accurate ratio of marshmallows to butter to cereal when making Marshmallow Rice Krispie Treats.

If you open a package of marshmallows you will notice that not all marshmallows are the same size.

Look at the bottom images in the picture above. The smaller marshmallow weighs 4 grams while the larger marshmallow weighs a whopping 7 grams. We found this same discrepancy in all brands of marshmallows.

Large Jet-Puffed Mini Marshmallow on the left and small mini marshmallow on the right.

Marshmallows are not all created equal.

The picture above shows the difference between two mini marshmallows. There's a striking difference between the two.

You can measure your marshmallows using a cup or you can count them out but you will always get the best accuracy when you weigh them.

We developed our marshmallow cereal treats recipes using 10-ounce and 16-ounce bags of marshmallows as that is the industry standard at this time. You may also find 10.5-ounce bags as well.

Bags of marshmallows including Kraft Jet-Puffed, Campfire Stay Puft, Dandies Vegan, Kroger, Target, and Walmart marshmallows.

Does it really matter if I use the exact amount of marshmallows in a recipe?

We have found that using an accurate amount of marshmallows will give your cereal treats just the right amount of chew but having a few less or a few more won't ruin your marshmallow crispy treats.

If you use marshmallows for other recipes it might matter more though so we've counted, weighed, and measured all sorts of marshmallows to give you the most accurate amounts of marshmallows to use in your recipes.

Marshmallow Brands (that we used)

  • Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
  • Campfire Stay Puft Marshmallows
  • Target Good and Gather Marshmallows
  • Walmart Great Value Marshmallows
  • Kroger Marshmallows
  • Whole Foods 365 Marshmallows
  • Dandies Marshmallows (vegan)
  • Smash Mallow
  • Max Mallow

Based on the nutrition labels on the packages of marshmallows 1 cup of marshmallows = 1.66 ounces.

You can use any of these marshmallows to make cereal treats, but each brand of marshmallows is slightly different. The dimension and density of the marshmallows can vary greatly within bags and among brands.

How many mini marshmallows are in a bag?

The number of mini marshmallows in a bag depends on the brand of marshmallows and the size bag. There can be as few as 420 or as many as 482 mini marshmallows in a 10-ounce bag or as few as 676 or as many as 773 mini marshmallows in a 16-ounce bag. That's a pretty big difference that's why we give you a conversion chart below for every brand of marshmallows.

How many regular marshmallows are in a bag?

This number varies depending on the size of the bag and the brand of the marshmallows. A 10-ounce bag of marshmallows can have between 38 and 43 regular marshmallows and 16-ounce bags may have as few as 61 marshmallows or as many as 69 regular marshmallows.

You'll need to continue reading to get a more definitive answer to these questions.

How many mini marshmallows are in a cup?

There can be anywhere between 70 and 80 mini marshmallows in a cup depending on the brand of marshmallows.

How many regular marshmallows are in a cup?

Depending on the brand of marshmallow, you'll find 6-8 marshmallows in 1 cup.

Weigh Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows on kitchen scale and in a 1 cup measuring cup.

We typically use Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows to make our rice crispy treats. Jet-Puffed marshmallows taste great and provide the perfect chew in our treats. Plus they are readily available at most grocery or discount stores, melt easily, and are not too sticky.

How many Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows are in 1 cup?

  • 7 regular marshmallows = 1.66 ounces = 1 cup

    • You can actually get 8 marshmallows shoved into 1 measuring cup, but the weight will be too high.
  • 70-72 mini marshmallows = 1.66 ounces = 1 cup

How many Jet-Puffed Marshmallows in a bag?

Kraft Jet-Puffed marshmallows currently come packaged in 10-ounce, 12-ounce, and 16-ounce bags. We typically use 10-ounce and 16-ounce bags in our recipes.

  • 10 ounces = 40 regular marshmallows = 6 cups (about 420) minis

  • 12 ounces = 49 regular marshmallows = 7 ¼ cups of minis

  • 16 ounces = 64 regular marshmallows = 9 ⅔ cups (about 676) minis

Kraft Jet-Puffed Jumbo Marshmallows in a 10 ounce bag and a 16 ounce bag.

How many Jumbo Marshmallows for Rice Krispie Treats?

Kraft makes Jumbo marshmallows which are wonderful to roast over a campfire. They currently come in 24-ounce bags.

You can also use jumbo marshmallows to make Rice Krispie Treats, but I highly recommend cutting them into quarters using buttered or greased kitchen shears before melting them. This will cut down the time it takes for the jumbo marshmallows to melt.

Once again, we recommend you weigh the marshmallows as the size can vary greatly, but you can use these measurements in your recipes.

  • 1 jumbo marshmallows = 0.92 - 1 ounce

  • 10-11 jumbo marshmallows = 10 ounces

  • 16-17 jumbo marshmallows = 16 ounces

So, use 16-17 jumbo marshmallows when making a full-size 9x13-inch pan of Rice Krispie Treats and 10-11 jumbo marshmallows to make a small 8x8-inch pan of Rice Krispie Treats.

Can you use big marshmallows for Rice Krispie Treats?

Yes, we just recommend you weigh out 10-ounces of jumbo marshmallows for an 8x8-inch pan of marshmallow crispy treats or 16-ounces of jumbo marshmallows for a 9x13-inch pan of the treats. Or use 10-11 jumbo marshmallows for a small batch or 16-17 jumbo marshmallows for a large batch.

Kraft Jet-Puffed S'mores Marshmallows in a 10 ounce bag and a 16 ounce bag.

How many S'more Marshmallows to use in a recipe?

Jet-Puffed makes rectangle-shaped S'more Mallows which are perfect for melting over a fire to use to make s'mores.

We found the size of the s'mores marshmallows also vary greatly, so we recommend weighing them to get the most accurate measurement.

If you need to count them use these amounts:

  • 1 s’mores marshmallow = 0.5 -0.7 ounces

  • 14-20 s’mores marshmallows = 10 ounces

  • 23-32 s’mores marshmallows = 16 ounces

large and small rectangle s'mores marshmallow

It's easy to see the size variation among s'more mallows.

  • Use 20 small s'more mallows or 14 large s'more mallows in 10 ounces.

  • Use 23 large s'more mallows or 32 small s'more mallows in 16 ounces.

Weighing Campfire Stay Puft Marshmallows in a 10 ounce bag and in 1 cup.

How many Campfire Stay Puft Marshmallows in a cup?

  • 1 cup = 1.66 ounces = 7 regular marshmallows = 74-76 mini marshmallows

How many Campfire Stay Puft Marshmallows in a bag?

Campfire Stay Puft Mini Marshmallows are packaged in 10.5 ounce bags. You can use the entire bag when making our cereal treat recipes that call for 10 ounces without too much trouble. The treats will be slightly stickier. Or, you can weigh out 10 ounces.

  • 10.5 ounce bag of minis = about 6 ¾ cups

  • 10 ounces = 40 regular marshmallows = 6 cups (about 456) minis

I did not find 16-ounce bags of Campfire marshmallows.

Campfire also makes jumbo marshmallows. They are similar to the Jet-Puffed jumbo marshmallows.

You might also find bags of Campfire marshmallows that are not branded at Stay Puft.

Campfire marshmallows have a really nice flavor and they also melt easily but they are much more difficult to find in stores.

Measuring Great Value Marshmallows from Walmart in 1 cup

How many Walmart Great Value Marshmallows in a cup?

  • 1 cup = 1.66 ounces = 7 regular marshmallows = 80-82 mini marshmallows

How many Walmart Great Value Marshmallows in a bag?

  • 10 ounces = 42 regular marshmallows = 6 cups (480) minis

  • 16 ounces = 67-68 regular marshmallows = 9 ⅔ cups (773) minis

We found these marshmallows are much stickier than Jet-Puffed or Campfire Marshmallows once melted. They are more difficult to stir once melted and will make a sticker rice crispy treat.

Measuring Good and Gather Marshmallows from Walmart in 1 cup

How many Target Good & Gather Marshmallows in a cup?

  • 1 cup = 1.66 ounces = 6-7 regular marshmallows = 78 mini marshmallows

    • The 7 marshmallows that I put into the measuring cup weighed 1.8 ounces.

How many Target Good & Gather Marshmallows in a bag?

  • 10 ounces = 42-43 regular marshmallows = 6 cups (492) minis

  • 16 ounces = 68-69 regular marshmallows = 9 ⅔ cups (754) minis

We found these marshmallows are also much stickier than Jet-Puffed or Campfire Marshmallows once melted. They are more difficult to stir once melted and will make a sticker rice crispy treat.

Kroger Marshmallows measuring a cup or 1.66 ounces.

How many Kroger Marshmallows are in a cup?

  • 1 cup = 1.66 ounces = 7 regular marshmallows = 80 mini marshmallows

How many Kroger Marshmallows are in a bag?

  • 10 ounces = 43 regular marshmallows = 6 cups (480) minis

  • 16 ounces = 69 regular marshmallows = 9 ⅔ cups (773) minis

We found these marshmallows are also much stickier than Jet-Puffed or Campfire Marshmallows once melted. They are more difficult to stir once melted and will make a sticker rice crispy treat.

In general, we found store-brand marshmallows to make stickier treats. They must have more gelatin in them.

Whole Foods 365 marshmallows measured in a cup at 1.66 ounces.

How many Whole Foods 365 Marshmallows are in a cup?

  • 1 cup = 1.66 ounces = 6 regular marshmallows = 76 mini marshmallows

How many Whole Foods 365 Marshmallows are in a bag?

  • 10 ounces = 38 regular marshmallows = 6 cups (456) minis

  • 16 ounces = 61 regular marshmallows = 9 ⅔ cups (734) minis

We found these regular marshmallows to be a bit denser than others. There are 6 regular marshmallows in 1.66 ounces instead of 7.

26 Dandies Marshmallows in a 10-ounce bag and 4 in 1.66 ounces.

How many Dandies Vegan Marshmallows in a bag or cup?

Dandies vegan marshmallows are almost twice as dense as gelatin-based marshmallows.

  • 26 marshmallows in a 10-ounce bag
  • 4 Dandies marshmallows in 1.66 (equates to a cup of regular marshmallows)

They taste great but do not melt as easily as other marshmallows. We suggest you cut the large marshmallows in quarters before melting. You'll need to smash them often while they are melting to get them to completely melt.

When using Dandies Marshmallows to make our vegan and gluten free Rice Krispie Treats you will use the entire 10-ounce bag in the recipe.

Max Mallows and Smash Mallows

Max Mallows and Smash Mallows are not tube-shaped like most store-bought marshmallows.

The Max Mallows are cut into very random rectangle shapes. They are sugar-free and keto and paleo. There were 13 marshmallows in a 3.4-ounce bag. I will share a recipe using these marshmallows soon.

Smash Mallows are cut into much more uniform rectangle shapes. The Toasted Vanilla Marshmallows are really delicious and make delicious treats. I'll be sharing a recipe using them soon too.

Homemade Marshmallows

You can make homemade marshmallows then use them to create Rice Krispie Treats.

I love the flavor of homemade marshmallows and I enjoyed the flavor of the treats made using them, but I have to admit that treats made using store-bought marshmallows taste just as good and are much less work.

If I make homemade marshmallows, I'd prefer just eating them or using them to make marshmallow-filled chocolates.
