how to make mummy Rice Krispie Treats for Halloween

You will need:

RICE KRISPIES CEREAL

Use the classic cereal or any store-brand version.

MARSHMALLOWS

You will need 16 ounces of marshmallows. Different brands have different densities, so it’s best to use a scale or the weight printed on the bag as a guide, but in general, 10 ounces of marshmallows is 40 regular size OR 6 cups of mini.

We now have a marshmallow conversion chart to help you, no matter what brand you buy.

BUTTER

For best results, we recommend using European-style, salted butter.

VANILLA CONFECTIONARY COATING

Confectionary coating mimics chocolate, but you don't need to temper it when melting, so it's ideal for our mummy's "bandages." You may also use white candy melts.

where can I find confectionary coating or candy melts?

Many supermarkets carry confectionary coating in the baking aisle. Candy melts are available at craft stores. I'll also link to online resources below.

CANDY EYES

Candy eyes are my favorite decorating tool. These simple sprinkles liven up any dessert!

let's make cereal treats!

step one: make your Rice Krispie Treats

Grease your baking pan, bowls and spatulas with cooking spray.

Place 7 cups Rice Krispies cereal in a large, greased bowl.

Begin to melt 6 tablespoons European salted butter (cut in pieces) in a medium-large saucepan set over low heat. Stir in 16 ounces of marshmallows.

Continue to melt over low heat, stirring often, until about 75% of the marshmallows have melted. Remove from heat and stir well, using the residual heat to full melt the marshmallows.

The mixture should be very smooth.

Alternatively, you can melt the butter and marshmallows in the microwave for 1 minute, and stir well to fully melt the marshmallows.

Pour the marshmallows over the cereal and toss to coat evenly.

Spread the treats into the greased baking pan and gently press into an even layer.

Let the crispy treats cool at least an hour.

Cut the treats into 2 ½-inch by 1 ½-inch rectangles. (You should have about 18 to 20.)

step two: melt your coating

Place 4 ounces of confectionary coating or candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave at 50 percent power for 90 seconds. Stir very well, using the residual heat to fully melt the candy.

When cool to the touch, transfer to a disposable decorating bag and snip the tip. Alternatively, use a freeze-grade Ziplock bag and snip the tip.

step three: decorate your Rice Krispie Treat mummies

Insert a lollipop stick into the Rice Krispie Treats (if using).

Pipe the confectionary coating back and forth to create bandages.

Top immediately with two candy eyes.

Let dry well, at least 30 minutes.
