You will hit a home run when you surprise your little (and big) sluggers with these Rice Krispie Treat Baseballs. They are easy to make using our very best marshmallow cereal treats recipe and can easily be decorated using delicious white modeling chocolate and a red food coloring marker.
The baseball players and fans in your family will cheer when you make them these baseball rice crispy treats.
Start by making a batch of the absolute best rice krispie treats.
We tested 20 different versions of this simple 3-ingredient recipe to find the perfect ratio of butter, marshmallows, and cereal. If you follow our recipe your treats will be perfectly crispy and chewy and have a fabulous flavor.
Then you'll cut the treats using a round cookie cutter and decorate them using circles of white modeling chocolate.
The modeling chocolate not only tastes great (it tastes like soft and chewy white chocolate) but it also provides the treats with a smooth surface on which to add the red laces.
You can simply draw the laces on using red food coloring using either a food coloring marker or a food-use-only paintbrush.
Let's make some treats.
Ingredients:
Cereal Treats
- 6 tablespoons salted butter
- For the very best flavor, you should use European-style salted butter like Presidents, Kerrygold, or Kroger Private Selection Creamy French-style Salted Butter.
- 16 ounces Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
- 7 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies Cereal
Decorations
- white modeling chocolate
- red food coloring marker or liquid food coloring
- ¼ cup marshmallow fluff
Stovetop method:
- Begin to melt the butter over low heat in a medium or large saucepan.
- Add the marshmallows to the saucepan and stir.
- Continue to stir often, until about 75% of the marshmallows are melted.
- Remove the pan from the heat and continue to stir, smashing the marshmallows using a rubber spatula or the back of a wooden spoon, until the marshmallows completely melt and become smooth.
- Stir in the Rice Krispies cereal or pour the marshmallows over the cereal and toss to combine. Either way works fine.
- Then spread into a well-buttered sheet pan.
- You want the treats to be about ¾ inch thick.
- I spread the cereal mixture into 13x18 pan but filled it about ¾'s full. You could just spread it into a 9X13 inch pan but the treats will be a bit too thick to easily cut with a standard metal cookie cutter. They aren't typically very tall.
- Allow the treats to cool for about an hour before cutting into rectangles or squares.
Make Rice Krispie Treats in the Microwave:
- Combine the butter and marshmallows in a large microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat on high power for 1 minute then remove and stir until the melted butter blends with the marshmallows.
- Keep stirring until the marshmallows melt.
- If needed, reheat for 15-30 second increments, stirring after each until the marshmallows are fully melted.
- Stir in the rice crispy cereal then spread into a well-buttered sheet pan.
- You want the treats to be about ¾ inches thick.
- Give the cereal treats time to cool before cutting.
NOTES:
- Every microwave is different so use these instructions as a guide.
- Be cautious not to overheat the marshmallows as they may burn.
- Also if you get the marshmallows too hot you end up with hard, rather than chewy, Rice Krispie Treats.
- Keep stirring the marshmallows to see if they will melt fully before heating them again.
- When you watch the video below you will notice that the marshmallows do not even look melted when they come out of the microwave but with consistent stirring they do melt fully.
Cut Circles.
- See in the picture on the left how the 13x18 inch rimmed baking sheet pan is only about three-quarters full? My treats are about ¾-inch thick. You can spread it out to fill the entire pan if you want thinner treats.
- Use a 3 ¼ inch round cookie cutter to cut out as many treats as you can. I got 11.
- Then, if you would like, you can smash the scraps of cereal treats together and flatten them out and cut out more. I was able to get five more for a total of 16 treats.
- Of course, you can if you prefer, use a smaller cookie cutter to get more baseballs out of one sheet of Rice Krispie treats.
Make Modeling Chocolate.
Ingredients:
- 12 ounces white chocolate chips or bright white candy melts*
- ⅓ cup corn syrup
*If you use white chocolate chips your modeling chocolate will be off white like the modeling chocolate pictured above. You can add some white food coloring or you can use bright white candy melts to make your modeling chocolate instead.
You may notice in the video that I use chips to make the modeling chocolate but that the modeling chocolate I used to decorate my baseballs is bright white. I was a bit lazy and used some footage of the process of making the modeling chocolate from an old video. I already had some bright white modeling chocolate on hand and didn't want to make another batch for the video.
You can see a very detailed tutorial and instructions on my How to Make Modeling Chocolate page on my Hungry Happenings blog but below is a quick overview.
- Melt 12 ounces white chocolate or white confectionery coating and allow it to cool, stirring it frequently, until it reaches about 91 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Stir in ⅓ cup light corn syrup until it becomes very thick.
- Either knead the modeling chocolate on a cool surface, like marble or granite until smooth, or place it in a zip log back for about an hour to allow it to cool then knead it until smooth.
TIPS:
- Follow the rule about cooling your chocolate to make perfect modeling chocolate every time.
- If you over-heat or over-cool the chocolate and your modeling chocolate becomes greasy or dry, be sure to check out my Modeling Chocolate Tips page for instructions on how to fix it.
I wrote an entire book all about making modeling chocolate which is also called candy clay when it’s made using Candy Melts. My book, Candy Clay Creations, is filled with great tips on making and decorating treats using candy clay.
You can really see the difference in the color of the modeling chocolate here. It is very white, which is what I wanted for my baseball treats.
Cut circles.
- Roll out the modeling chocolate to about 1/16 inch thickness.
- I like to roll the modeling chocolate onto a non-stick silicone mat using a non-stick fondant rolling pin. It won't stick!
- If you don't have those tools, you can lightly dust a cutting board and wooden rolling pin with corn starch or powdered sugar before rolling out the modeling chocolate. Be sure to brush off any remaining powder using a soft pastry brush.
- Use a 3 inch round cookie cutter to cut out 16 circles (or as many as you need to decorate the treats you have cut out.)
- I like seeing a small amount of the cereal treat around the edge of my baseballs so I used a slightly smaller cutter.
- You can simply use the same cutter if you prefer.
Draw on Laces.
- Use the round cookie cutter to mark the circle of modeling chocolate where the laces should be. This just makes it easier to get the shape of the laces right.
- Then draw on the laces using a red food coloring marker or a food-use-only paintbrush.
- I like to use the marker because I have more control than I do with a paintbrush. However, the markers tend to dry out as I'm drawing on the modeling chocolate so I dip the tip into liquid red food coloring as it dries out. This helps to moisten the tip of the marker so I can continue to draw on the modeling chocolate.
- Let the food coloring dry completely.
Attach the baseball to the treat.
- Spread about a teaspoon of marshmallow fluff in the center of each round crispy treat.
- Then set one of the modeling chocolate baseballs over top.

- Serve.
Notes
- You can also use white frosting or clear piping gel to attach the modeling chocolate baseballs to the cereal treats.
- Cover the treats with tin foil or Glad Press 'n Seal and store them in a cool dry place for up to a week.
How to store your baseballs treats:
- Your cereal treats will taste best if eaten within the first few days but they will stay crispy and fresh for up to a week if wrapped well in tin foil or Glad Press 'n Seal.
- I typically tell you to store your treats in an airtight container, but the modeling chocolate can become very moist and sticky if stored that way.
- You could always store the treats in an airtight container then decorate them the day you plan to serve them.
- Do not refrigerate the treats as they may become soggy and soft and the modeling chocolate will definitely become sticky.

I made these for my son's baseball team and they turned out great. The flavor of the treats is amazing especially with the modeling chocolate baseballs on top. The kids loved them and asked me to make them for their next game. Thanks for the wonderful recipe and thorough instructions.

My wife made these for our son's baseball team and the moms all went nuts over them. The kids thought they were the coolest treats they've ever gotten after a game.
