How to make chalkboard rice crispy treats?
you'll need:
RICE KRISPIES CEREAL
- You'll use 7 cups of crisp rice cereal in this cereal treat recipe.
- We recommend using the original Kellogg's Rice Krispies Cereal for the best flavor and texture.
- See our taste test results where we compared a variety of cereals, here.
MARSHMALLOWS
- You'll need a 16-ounce bag of marshmallows.
- Always use the freshest marshmallows you have on hand. Fresh marshmallows make more delicately chewy treats.
- If you can't find a 16-ounce bag of marshmallows, you can weigh, count, or measure the marshmallows so you have the right amount for this recipe. Check out our Marshmallow Conversion Chart.
BUTTER
- We have found that European-style salted butter provides the best flavor in our cereal treats recipes. You'll be amazed at the difference good butter will make in this recipe.
- When we tested this recipe we found that 6 tablespoons of butter give the treats the best flavor and texture.
- We recommend using KeriGold or President Butter but Kroger Private Selection French-style Butter is great too.
CANDY MELTS
- You'll need two 12-ounce bags of Black Candy Melts to decorate 18 rice crispy treat chalkboards.
- Each treat will be topped with about 1 ounce of black candy melts but you'll need extra to create a nice flat surface on top of the treats.
- You will also need a few bright white candy melt wafers. You can break them in half and use the half-moon-shaped candy to write on your chalkboards.
POWDERED SUGAR
- To make the chalkboards look authentic, you will brush a light dusting of powdered sugar across the surface of the chocolate.
- Not only will the powdered sugar help to make the chalkboards look like they've been written on and erased, but it will also enhance the white letters and numbers making them show up better on the boards.
CARAMEL
- It will be easiest to use Caramel Apple Wraps. They are flat sheets of caramel that can easily be cut into strips to make the frames for around the chalkboards.
- You could also use modeling chocolate or fondant to make the frames.
TOOLS YOU'LL NEED:
- medium-large saucepan
- 9" x 13" baking pan
- large mixing bowl
- silicone spatula or large mixing spoon
- butter or cooking spray to grease your pan, bowl, and spatula (I prefer the flavor of butter, but the non-stick spray works too.)
- baking pans that will fit in your freezer
- parchment paper to cover the baking pan
- sharp knife - You'll use this to cut the white candy melts around the outer edge of the treats.
- pizza wheel (greased well with butter or cooking spray)

You can find the ingredients and supplies to make these back-to-school cereal treats from Amazon. I earn a small commission for any sales when you use the links below at NO extra cost to you.
step 1 - Make Rice Krispie Treat Bars
- Grease a large mixing bowl with butter, or spray it with cooking spray, then pour in 7 cups of Rice Krispies Cereal.
- Begin to melt 6 tablespoons of European-style Salted Butter in a medium-large saucepan set over low heat.
European-style salted butter will really enhance the flavor of your treats. - Add 16 ounces of marshmallows.
You can use either mini or traditional marshmallows. I prefer the mini marshmallows, as they melt really quickly. - Stir the marshmallows occasionally until about ¾'s of them are melted.
- Then remove the pan from the heat, and continue to stir, smashing the marshmallows, until they have all melted.
- Pour the melted marshmallows over the cereal and toss to coat.
- Spread into a well-buttered, non-stick, 9 X 13-inch pan.
If you prefer, you can grease it using cooking spray. - Set aside to cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting into 18 rectangles.
step 2 - top treats with a smooth black surface
If you simply spread melted Black Candy Melts (or dark chocolate) over the surface of your treats it will be bumpy making it difficult to write on the chalkboards. Follow these instructions to get a flat, smooth surface.
- Spread a thin layer of Black Candy Melts over the surface of a Rice Krispie Treat.
- Freeze the coated treat and a parchment paper-lined baking try for 3 minutes.
- Remove the pan and quickly spread a thin layer of black candy melts over the paper, making it about 4 inches by 3 inches.
- Immediately set the black candy melts coated treat into the wet chocolate.
- Let the chocolate begin to harden for 10-20 seconds.
- Use a sharp knife to cut straight edges in the black candy coating around the edges of the treat.
- This is easiest to do when the chocolate is soft so don't wait until it hardens.
- Freeze for 3 more minutes.
- Remove and carefully break off the excess black candy coating around the edge of the treat.
NOTES:
- You can re-melt the pieces of excess candy melts so they don't go to waste.
- I showed you how to make 1 treat at a time because it's easier to film and photograph, but you can spread a thin layer of chocolate across your pan and set a few treats on top. Just be sure to move quickly making your cuts.
step 3 - decorate the chalkboard treats with edible chalk
- Let the chilled treat sit at room temperature for at least 15 minutes before drawing on them.
- Break a bright white candy melt wafer in half.
- Use the pointed edge of the candy melt to write letters or numbers on each chocolate-coated treat.
- Brush a thin dusting of powdered sugar over the surface of the chalkboard.
- Be sure when you are writing to leave room around the edge for your caramel frame.
step 4 - make caramel frame
- Peel a caramel apple wrap off both pieces of paper.
- Caramel apple wraps are thin, flat discs of caramel that you can easily wrap around an apple to make a caramel apple. They are the perfect candy to use to make chalkboard frames.
- You can also use modeling chocolate (made using milk chocolate) or fondant to make the frames
- Use a pizza wheel to cut thin strips of caramel.
- Every time to make a cut, pick up the larger piece of caramel to peel it away from the strip you've just cut.
- Cut a 3-inch (or the length of your treat) strip and set it at the top edge of the treat.
- Cut a second 3-inch strip and set it on the bottom edge.
- Measure and cut two strips that should fit on the left and right sides of the treat.
- Press down on the caramel to ensure it sticks to the treat.
- The caramel should be sticky enough to stick, but if it doesn't, you can attach it to the treats using a small amount of melted black candy melts.
- If you use modeling chocolate or fondant, you will need to attach the frames to the chalkboards using melted candy melts.
