Create baby blue, medium blue, or royal blue Rice Krispie Treats by adding drops of blue food coloring to our delicious marshmallow cereal treats recipe.
4tablespoonssalted butter(European-style for the best flavor)
10ouncesmarshmallows
3-20drops blue food coloring
Instructions
Grease an 8-inch or 9-inch square non-stick baking pan, an extra-large mixing bowl, and a silicone spatula or wooden spoon with butter or baking spray.
Pour the Rice Krispies Cereal into the mixing bowl and then set aside.
Cut the butter into slices and place them in a medium-large saucepan.
Set the pan on the stove set over LOW heat.
Allow the butter to begin melting and then pour marshmallows on top.
Stir every few minutes until about 75% of the marshmallows have melted. This will take between 5-7 minutes.
Remove the pan from the heat and stir the marshmallows until completely melted. The residual heat in the pan will help to continue melting the marshmallows.
Alternatively, you can melt the marshmallows and butter in your microwave. Pour the butter and marshmallows into a microwave-safe mixing bowl. Heat on high power for 1 minute then let the bowl rest in the warm microwave for 3 minutes. Remove the bowl and stir until the butter and marshmallows are melted and smooth. If needed, heat for additional 10-second bursts of high power, resting and stirring after each until melted.
Do not overheat your marshmallows or your marshmallow cereal treats will be too hard!
Add a few drops of blue food coloring and mix until well blended.
Continue adding more drops of blue coloring until you achieve the desired shade of blue. The blue-colored marshmallows need to be a little brighter than you want your treats to be because the cereal will dull the color.
Pour the blue marshmallows over the cereal and stir until they are well blended.
Gently spread the cereal treat mixture into an even layer in the greased pan.
Set the pan of treats aside for at least 30 minutes before cutting into 12 rectangles or 16 squares.
Serve and enjoy!
