how to make zombie Rice Krispie Treats for Halloween
You will need:
RICE KRISPIES CEREAL
Use the classic cereal or any store-brand version.
MARSHMALLOWS
You will need 16 ounces of marshmallows. Different brands have different densities, so it’s best to use a scale or the weight printed on the bag as a guide, but in general, 10 ounces of marshmallows is 40 regular size OR 6 cups of mini.
We now have a marshmallow conversion chart to help you, no matter what brand you buy.
BUTTER
For best results, we recommend using European-style, salted butter.
SUGAR COOKIE ICING
Whip up a batch of easy sugar cookie icing. This icing does not require egg whites or meringue powder. You only need confectioner's sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
CANDY EYES
Candy eyes are my favorite decorating tool. These simple sprinkles liven up any dessert! Here I use both regular-sized and jumbo.

let's make cereal treats!
step one: make your Rice Krispie Treats
Grease your baking pan, bowls and spatulas with cooking spray.
Place 7 cups Rice Krispies cereal in a large, greased bowl.
Begin to melt 6 tablespoons European salted butter (cut in pieces) in a medium-large saucepan set over low heat. Stir in 16 ounces of marshmallows.
Continue to melt over low heat, stirring often, until about 75% of the marshmallows have melted. Remove from heat and stir well, using the residual heat to full melt the marshmallows.
The mixture should be very smooth.
Alternatively, you can melt the butter and marshmallows in the microwave for 1 minute, and stir well to fully melt the marshmallows.
Pour the marshmallows over the cereal and toss to coat evenly.
Spread the treats into the greased baking pan and gently press into an even layer.
Let the crispy treats cool at least an hour.
Cut the treats into 2 ½-inch by 1 ½-inch rectangles. (You should have about 18 to 20.)
step two: mix up your icing
Place 2 cups confectioner's sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 4 tablespoons milk, and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
Whisk very well.
You may need to add additional confectioner's sugar to thicken to desired consistency or a bit more milk to thin.
Divide your icing and tint with green, black, and brown food coloring. You'll need more green than the other colors.
Scrape the red and black into disposable decorating bags and close tightly with a rubber band. Snip the tips.
step three: decorate your Rice Krispie Treat zombies
With the red edible marker, draw some blood on the Jumbo candy eyes.
Ice each treat with green icing. TIP: An off-set spatula is great for this.
Top with the candy eyes.
Pipe a mouth and blood with the black and red icing.
Let the icing set.
