non-stick foil (you may also use butter or nonstick spray)
non-stick spray or butter for greasing
Ingredients
4 ⅔ cupsRice Krispies cereal
10ounces marshmallows (Jet-Puffed preferred)(about 40 regular OR 6 cups mini)
4tablespoonssalted, European-style butter
1bagblack licorice candy
green food coloring(Americolor Soft Gel Paste Leaf Green and/or Electric Green suggested)
1 tablespoonlight corn syrup(optional)
Instructions
Line a 8 or 9-inch square baking pan with non-stick foil.
Add Rice Krispies to a large, greased bowl.
If melting on the stove-top: start to melt 4 tablespoons butter in the saucepan over low heat. Add marshmallows and melt, stirring occasionally, until about 75 percent melted. Remove from the heat and stir until fully melted and smooth.
If melting in the microwave: Add the marshmallows and butter to the greased, microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for 1 minute. Let sit a couple minutes and then stir very well until fully melted and smooth.
Add a few drops of green food coloring and stir the marshmallow mixture very well. Continue to add green food coloring until desired shade is achieved.
Scrape the marshmallow mixture over the cereal and use a greased spatula to blend very well.
Transfer the cereal mixture to the baking pan and spread evenly. Let set one to two hours.
Remove from the pan and cut into 16 squares.
Take a piece of licorice and set it on a cutting board standing up. Use a sharp knife to slice the ridges off of each side, making a square licorice log. Slice the log into thin slices, creating small squares.
Arrange the squares on the Rice Krispie Treats to look like Creepers. The pieces should stick, but you can adhere more securely with dabs of light corn syrup.
Notes
To prepare a larger batch of treats in a 9 x 13 inch baking pan, use this ratio of ingredients:
6 tablespoons European-style salted butter
16 ounces Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
7 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies Cereal
