How to make Minecraft Rice Krispie Treats
We start with our BEST, taste-tested, award-winning Rice Krispie Treat recipe.
Tint the treats green (learn much more about coloring green Rice Krispie Treats) and add black licorice decorations.
What can I use instead of black licorice?
To make the easiest instructions I could, I chose to slice black licorice for the black decorations.
However, black licorice isn't everyone's favorite. So you do have alternatives:
- Simply remove the licorice pieces before eating.
- Prepare royal icing with black food coloring, and use a decorating bag to pipe squares of black icing.
- Try homemade fondant and tint with the black food coloring. Roll thinly and cut out squares with a tiny cookie cutter or knife.
- Make candy clay with back candy melts and follow the instructions above for rolling out.
Ingredients you'll need
You need only four ingredients plus some food coloring to make these treats.
- Kellogg's Rice Krispies Cereal - We recommend the classic, but any crispy rice cereal will do.
- butter - We recommend using salted European-style butter (with a higher butterfat content than American-made butter). It will give your treats the very best flavor. See our taste test results for more information. The salt in the butter helps to balance out the sweetness of the cereal and marshmallows.
- marshmallows - We recommend using Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows. Some store-brand marshmallows may have different textures and weights. You can use mini or large marshmallows. See our marshmallow conversion chart for details about measuring marshmallows.
- Food Coloring -- To tint the treats green, I recommend using Leaf Green Americolor Soft Gel Paste (for a more traditional green) or Electric Green Americolor Soft Gel Paste (for a green with a yellow tint) or a combination of both. See this post for tips on coloring GREEN treats with liquid food coloring.
- Black Licorice -- To make the black decorations (see above for alternatives), use pieces of black licorice candy.
Equipment
- extra-large mixing bowl - You want to use a bowl that allows you room to mix the cereal and marshmallows together.
- medium-large saucepan -If you're making treats on the stove-top, you'll need a sauce pan.
- microwave-safe bowl -- To make the treats in the microwave, you'll need a large bowl.
- 8-inch or 9-inch baking pan - The latter size will produce thinner treats.
- non-stick foil -- While you may line your baking pan with parchment or grease the pan, the foil (and parchment) allows you to lift the treats easily from the pan for cutting.
- non-stick cooking spray -- I find spraying bowls and spatulas makes everything so much easier. (You may also use butter to grease.)
- silicone spatula - Grease your spatulas so mixing is easy!
Instructions
Line a 8 or 9-inch square baking pan with non-stick foil.
Add 4 ⅔ cups Rice Krispies to a large, greased bowl.
Melt the butter and marshmallows.
If melting on the stove-top:
Start to melt 4 tablespoons butter in the saucepan over low heat.
Add 10 ounces of marshmallows (about 40 regular size or 6 cups mini) and melt, stirring occasionally, until about 75 percent melted. Remove from the heat and stir until fully melted and smooth.
If melting in the microwave:
Add the marshmallows and butter to the greased, microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for 1 minute. Let sit a couple minutes and then stir very well until fully melted and smooth.
Tint the mixture green.
Add a few drops of green food coloring and stir the marshmallow mixture very well. Continue to add green food coloring until desired shade is achieved.
Scrape the marshmallow mixture over the cereal and use a greased spatula to blend very well.
Transfer the cereal mixture to the baking pan and spread evenly.
Let set one to two hours.
Remove from the pan and cut into 16 squares.
Decorate the Creepers.
Take a piece of licorice and set it on a cutting board standing up. Use a sharp knife to slice the ridges off of each side, making a square licorice log. Slice the log into thin slices, creating small squares.
Arrange the squares on the Rice Krispie Treats to look like Creepers. The pieces should stick, but you can adhere more securely with dabs of light corn syrup.
How do I make a larger batch of Rice Krispie Treats?
To make Rice Krispie Treats in a 9 x 13 inch baking pan, use this ration of marshmallows, butter, and cereal:
- 6 tablespoons European-style salted butter
- 16 ounces Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
- 7 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies Cereal
Storage
These rice crispy treats will taste best the day they are made but they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
To keep them longer, you can freeze them in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to 3 months.
