Ingredients
- butter - you'll get the best flavor if you use European-style salted butter
- marshmallows - you can use mini marshmallows or regular marshmallows See our Marshmallow conversion chart for measuring details.
- yellow food coloring
- Rice Krispies Cereal
- 4mm black sugar pearls or mini chocolate chips
- Mini Orange Starburst Fruit Chews (I used the minis because they are softer than the larger wrapped squares.)
- Mini Yellow Starburst Fruit Chews
Supplies
- 2-3 quart saucepan
- extra-large mixing bowl
- silicone spatula or wooden spoon
- 3 ⅜-inch by 3-inch egg-shaped cookie cutter
- silicone mat, non-stick tin foil, or tin foil sprayed with cooking spray
The quantities listed above make 9 cereal treat chicks using a 3 ⅜-inch long by 3-inch wide egg-shaped cookie cutter.
You can use any size egg cutter that you have on hand. You just may need to adjust the size of the beaks and feet and you may need more candy to decorate your chicks.

Easter Rice Krispie Treats - Baby Chicks
Equipment
- 3 ⅜-inch by 3-inch egg-shaped cookie cutter
Ingredients
Rice Krispie Treats
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 10 ounces marshmallows
- yellow food coloring
- 4 ⅔ cups Rice Krispies Cereal
Decorations
- 18 (4mm) black sugar pearls or mini chocolate chips
- 18 Mini Orange Starburst Fruit Chews
- 5 Mini Yellow Starburst Fruit Chews
Instructions
Rice Krispie Treats
- Grease a large mixing bowl with butter or baking spray and pour in 4 ⅔ cups of Rice Krispies Cereal, then set aside.
- Heat the salted butter and marshmallows over low heat in a medium saucepan until about 75% of the marshmallows have melted.
- Remove from the heat and stir, smashing the marshmallows, until completely melted.
- Stir in 3 drops of yellow food coloring.
- Pour over the Rice Krispies Cereal and stir until well blended.
- Set aside to cool for 5 minutes.
- Grease your hands and the inside of an egg-shaped cookie cutter with butter or baking spray.
- Set the cookie cutter onto a silicone baking mat or a non-stick baking pan.
- Fill the cookie cutter with yellow cereal treat mixture.
- Flatten the top.
- Remove the cookie cutter, set it down next to the egg-shaped treat, and repeat creating a total of 9 egg-shaped treats.
Decorations:
- Press two black sugar pearl "eyes" into the Rice Krispie Treat about an inch from the top.
- Cut and shape one Mini Orange Starburst Fruit Chew into a chick's beak and press it onto the treat just below the eyes.
- Cut another mini orange Starburst into 6 strips and use them to create two feet.
- Press them onto the treat near the bottom edge.
- Cut a Mini Yellow Starburst Fruit Chew into 8 strips.
- Press four of the strips at the very top of the treat to create the chick's head feathers.
- Repeat.
Notes
- Heat the marshmallows and butter in a large mixing bowl in the microwave on high heat for 1 minute. Then stir vigorously, smashing the marshmallows, until melted.
- Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
- You'll want to decorate your treats while the marshmallows in the treats are still sticky so the candy will stick. If the candy won't stick you can use melted chocolate, clear piping gel, frosting, or marshmallow fluff as "glue."
- If you use mini chocolate chips for the eyes, be sure your Rice Krispie Treats have cooled completely. If the treats are still warm the chips will melt and turn white once they cool.
Alternative decorating methods:
You can create chicken feet and beaks using orange candy melts, orange slices or gumdrops, salt water taffy, modeling chocolate, fondant, frosting, or even circus peanuts.
