Let's make some chicks.
You'll need:
- 4 tablespoons salted butter (you'll get the best flavor if you use European-style butter)
- 10 ounces marshmallows
- yellow food coloring
- 4 ⅔ cups Rice Krispies Cereal
- 3 ⅜-inch by 3-inch egg-shaped cookie cutter
- 18 (4mm) black sugar pearls or mini chocolate chips
- 18 Mini Orange Starburst Fruit Chews (I used the minis because they are softer than the larger wrapped squares.)
- 5 Mini Yellow Starburst Fruit Chews
The quantities listed above make 9 cereal treat chicks using a 3 ⅜-inch long by 3-inch wide egg-shaped cookie cutter.
You can use any size egg cutter that you have on hand. You just may need to adjust the size of the beaks and feet and you may need more candy to decorate your chicks.
Make yellow egg-shaped crispy treat chicks.
- Spray a large mixing bowl with baking spray (or grease with butter).
- Pour 4 ⅔ cups of Rice Krispies Cereal into the bowl and set aside.
- Heat 4 tablespoons of salted butter and 10 ounces of marshmallows over low heat in a medium saucepan until about 75% of the marshmallows have melted.
- Remove from the heat and stir, smashing the marshmallows, until completely melted.
- Alternatively, you can heat the marshmallows and butter in a large mixing bowl in the microwave on high heat for 1 minute. Then stir vigorously, smashing the marshmallows, until melted.
- Stir in 3-4 drops of yellow food coloring.
- Pour the yellow marshmallows over the Rice Krispies Cereal and stir until well blended.
- Set aside to cool for 5 minutes.
- Spray your hands and the inside of your egg-shaped cookie cutter with baking spray or grease with butter.
- Set the cookie cutter onto a silicone baking mat or a non-stick baking pan. You could also spray a piece of tin foil with baking spray. You just want to work on a non-stick surface. The marshmallow treats will still be rather sticky.
- Pick up a handful of the yellow Rice Krispie Treat mixture and gently press it into your egg-shaped cookie cutter.
- Fill the cookie cutter and flatten the cereal mixture.
- Lift the cookie cutter up off the egg-shaped crispy treat.
- Repeat, creating 9 treats (or more if you use a smaller cookie cutter).
Decorate the treats.
- Press two black sugar pearls or mini chocolate chips into the Rice Krispie Treat about an inch from the top.
- Cut one corner off of a Mini Orange Starburst Fruit Chew and shape the larger part into a chick's beak.
- Press it onto the Rice Krispie Treat just under the eyes.
- Cut another orange candy into 6 strips to create the chick's feet. Press them onto the treat near the bottom edge.
- Cut a Mini Yellow Starburst Fruit Chew into 8 strips. Press four of the strips at the very top of the treat to create the chick's head feathers. Curl them slightly to make them look whispy!
- Repeat, decorating all of your baby chick rice crispy treats.
NOTES:
You'll want to decorate your treats while the marshmallows in the treats are still sticky so the candy will stick. If the candy won't stick you can use melted chocolate, clear piping gel, frosting, or marshmallow fluff as "glue."
Alternative decorating methods:
- You can alternatively pipe orange candy melts onto the cereal treats to create the beaks and feet and chocolate candy melts for the eyes.
- You could also use orange and yellow saltwater taffy instead of the Starburst.
- Or you could decorate the chicks using modeling chocolate or fondant.
You can decorate lots of different Easter desserts to look like baby chicks. They are so simple to make just by adding big eyes, an orange beak, and two little chicken feet to a yellow dessert like lemon bars or cake balls.

TIPS for making Baby Chick Themed Treats for Easter:
- You can create chicken feet and beaks using orange candy melts, orange slices or gumdrops, modeling chocolate, fondant, frosting, or even circus peanuts.
- My favorite candies to use to make beaks on smaller baby chick treats are orange candy coated sunflower seeds.
