Use pink, yellow, blue, and purple Peeps marshmallow chicks and bunnies to make multi-colored Peeps Rice Krispie Treats for Easter or any day. These gooey marshmallow cereal bars are so colorful and fun. Kids of all ages will love them.
If you have packages of Peeps in your Easter basket or pantry or you got a great deal on them after the holiday, you can use them to make a pan of brightly colored marshmallow cereal bars.
It's so easy to make these cereal treats just by swapping out 4 packages of Peeps for one 10 ounce bag of marshmallows and by using our BEST Rice Krispie Treat recipe.
We have already found, by doing extensive taste testing, the perfect combination of butter, marshmallows, and cereal, and we only had to tweak the recipe slightly when using the marshmallow Peeps.
ingredients
You'll only need three ingredients to make these treats
- 6 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
- 4 (3-ounce) packages of Peeps (one yellow, one pink, one blue, and one purple)
- 6 tablespoons European-style salted butter (this butter will seriously enhance the flavor of your cereal treats)
instructions
- Grease an 8-inch or 9-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
- I prefer to take a softened pat of butter and spread it around the pan. I just like the flavor the butter imparts to the outside of my cereal treats, but cooking spray works fine, as well.
- Directions for making this Rice Krispie treats recipe in a 9-inch by 13-inch pan are below too.
microwave directions:
- Pick the dark spots (eyes and nose) off of the Peeps otherwise, you will have black dots in your cereal treats.
- Place one color of the Peeps in a large, microwave-safe bowl.
- Add 1 tablespoon butter.
- Microwave on high for 45 to 60 seconds. In my 700-watt microwave, it took 1 minute.
- If you want your Peeps rice crispy treats to have more vibrant color then add 1-2 drops of matching food coloring.
- Stir until the marshmallows are completely melted.
- Pour 1 ½ cups of Rice Krispies Cereal into the bowl and stir to coat.
- Repeat this process for the 3 remaining colors of Peeps.
- Pinch off small handfuls of the marshmallow cereal mixture and press them together.
- Place in the well-buttered 8-inch or 9-inch pan.
- Repeat, placing the next bunch of cereal treat mixture next to the first in the pan.
- Continue filling the pan. Watch the video to see exactly how this is done.
- You do not want to really blend the colors together. It's best to keep about 1-inch areas of each color.
- Let cool for at least 1 hour before cutting into 16 squares.
stove-top directions:
- Begin to melt the butter in a medium-large saucepan set over low heat.
- Add the marshmallow Peeps and stir occasionally until about 75% of the marshmallows have melted.
- Remove the pan from the heat and continue to stir, smashing the marshmallows, until melted and smooth.
- Use the process listed above to create the multi-color rice crispy bars.
NOTE: See our How to Make Rice Krispie Treats FAQ page for more tips and tricks for making perfect cereal treats.
large batch of treats ingredients
- 1 ½ packages of each of the 4 colors of marshmallow Peeps
- 6 tablespoons salted butter
- 9 cups of Rice Krispies Cereal
Use the instructions above, blending 1 ½ packages of Peeps with 1 ½ tablespoons butter, melted, with 2 ¼ cups Rice Krispies cereal then spread the colored cereal mixture into a well-buttered 9X13 inch pan.
Pro Tips:
Do not smash the cereal into the pan.
- Gently spread it into the pan. This will make light, easy-to-bite-into treats.
Do not overheat your marshmallows.
- If you rush the process of melting the marshmallows by cranking up your heat, you will overheat the sugar in the marshmallows, turning that sugar into hard candy, and your treats will be hard.
- Heat the marshmallows and butter on low heat! It takes some time for them to melt, but your patience will be rewarded as you will have ooey, gooey, chewy treats.
Use FRESH Peeps.
- The fresher your marshmallow Peeps, the softer your Peeps cereal treats will be.
Grease everything!
- Grease your saucepans, bowls, spatulas, and even your hands with either butter (my preference) or non-stick cooking spray to keep the marshmallows from sticking.
Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. Or wrap it well in wax paper and then place it in a zip-top bag and freeze it for up to 3 months.
